Penina was born about 1874 in Alabama. Her parents were Asa Isaac Wright and Mary Carpenter. She was unmarried and living with her parents in 1900 in Randolph County, Alabama. In July of that year she was married to John T. Yates in Randolph County. Her brother, Lafayette VanBuren Wright was killed in 1908 leaving 5 orphans. Penina and John adopted the youngest child of her brother. Her name was Hattie.
