Biography

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

Ephraim Wright, son of Abel Wright II and Rebecca (Terry) Wright, was baptized at the First Congregational Church in Lebanon in February 1703/4.[1][2] According to the 1881 NEHGR article "Genealogy of Lieut. Abel Wright, of Springfield, Mass.", Ephraim was born on February 29, 1704.[3] However, no record has been found that supports that specific date of birth, and it appears unlikely since he was baptized in February 1704.

First Marriage and Children

Ephraim married his first wife, Hannah Wood, in Windham, Connecticut on June 29, 1724.[4][3]

Ephraim and his first wife Hannah had the following children:

  1. John, b. March 18, 1726 in Windham,[5][3] bpt. April 3, 1726 in Lebanon[1]
  2. Hannah, bpt. October 18, 1727 in Windham,[6] presumably died young
  3. Hannah, b. February 4, 1731 in Windham,[7][3] bpt. February 14, 1731 in Lebanon[1]
  4. Martha, b. January 14, 1733 in Windham,[8][3] bpt. possibly May 26, 1734 in Franklin[9]
  5. Ephraim (twin), b. March 16, 1735 in Windham,[10][11][3] bpt. March 23, 1735 in Windham[6]
  6. Anna (twin), b. March 16, 1735 in Windham,[12][3] bpt. March 23, 1735 in Windham,[6] m. March 11, 1756 John Huntington of Windham,[3] d. May 6, 1758[3]
  7. Beriah, b. February 22, 1737 in Windham,[13] bpt. March 27, 1737 in Windham,[6] d. 1759 at Albany returning with his father from a military campaign in the French and Indian War[3]

It is possible, if not likely, that Ephraim and Hannah were also the parents of one or both of the following children who were baptized at the Lebanon First Congregational Church (where their children John and Hannah were baptized) in 1729: Ephraim Wright, bpt. January 26, 1729,[1] and Patience Wright, bpt. August 3, 1729.[14] As discussed in the profile for Patience Wright, Ephraim is the most probable candidate for her father.

Ephraim's first wife died in Windham on March 18, 1737.[15][3]

Second Marriage and Children

Based on the birth records of his later children and his estate records, Ephraim married, second, a woman whose first name was also Hannah. Her maiden name is unknown. Based on the birth record of his daughter Hannah, they were probably married about 1743. Ephraim and his second wife settled in Hebron, a town just west of Lebanon.

Ephraim and his second wife Hannah had the following children:

  1. Hannah, b. March 8, 1744 in Hebron[16]
  2. Sibbell, b. January 1, 1746 in Hebron[17]
  3. Elizabeth, b. April 13, 1750 in Hebron,[18] m. May 4, 1769 Daniel Payne/Paine in Lebanon[19]
  4. Phineas, b. April 26, 1754 in Hebron[20]
  5. Daniel, b. May 26, 1756[21][3] m. Patience ____,[3] d. October 1, 1822 in Westport[3]

Occupation; Land Transactions

Ephraim was a farmer.[3] He deeded land in Lebanon and Windham to several different persons from 1737-1757.[3]

Service in French and Indian War

Ephraim and his son Beriah served in Capt Edmond Wells' company from Hebron. Their names appear on the roll list for the company dated May 10, 1758[22][23] and June 14, 1758.[24][25] On the June list, Ephraim and Beriah appear with the rank of sergeant[24] and corporal,[25] respectively. Ephraim and Beriah also appear with those ranks on the list of soldiers in Capt. Charles Dewey's company.[26]

Death

Ephraim died on October 10, 1758.[27][28] The inventory of his estate was taken on November 27, 1758.[29] The inventory described Ephraim as having been "of Hebron."[29] Ephraim's widow Hannah and his eldest son John posted bond as administrators of his estate on December 4, 1758.[29]
