Military Service

Private in Company C of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 39 years old, married and working as a laborer when he enlisted on 28 February 1863 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.

Company Remarks

Along with Private James Thompson and Private Solomon Van Schaik of Company C, he was detailed for special duty as a butcher.[1]
