Biography

Richard Stephen Wright was born in 1868 at Chatham, Kent, England. He was the son of James Wright and Ann Taylor.^[1] Note: Several Strood poor law union registers give Richard's birth date as 4 Dec 1868 but his Royal Navy service record gives his birth date as 23 Dec 1868.

In the 1871 census, Richard Wright was age 2 living at Chatham Town, Kent with his father James Wright (32), mother Ann Wright (29), sister Ellen A Wright (0). Also a lodger Jane Gilbert (25).^[2]

In the 1881 census, Richard Wright was age 12 living at Beacon Wests Cottages, Chatham, Kent with his father James Wright (40), mother Ann Wright (41), sisters Ellen A Wright (11), Anne Wright (9).^[3]

Richard served in the Royal Navy from 16 Jul 1889 until 16 Jul 1906.^[4] He is not found in the 1891 or 1901 censuses and was probably serving aboard ship at the time.

Richard Wright married Annie Poynter in 1891 at Medway, Kent.^[5] They had two children: Amelia Annie Poynter (b. 1890), Richard Stanley Wright (b. 1893).

Richard's wife Annie died in 1896. Richard married Annie's sister Eliza Poynter on 15 May 1898 at St. Mary's Church, Chatham, Kent.^[6] They had one child: Beatrice May Wright (b. 1898). Eliza already had a son Frederick George Poynter (1895-1904).

In the 1911 census Richard Wright was age 43 living at Strood, Kent with his wife Eliza Wright (40), daughter Beatrice May Wright (13), son Richard Stanley Wright (19). Occupation: Cement Labourer.^[7]

Richard Stephen Wright died in 1928 age 59 at Strood, Kent.^[8][9]
