John Wright, a farmer by occupation, who was a native of North Carolina and represented an old family of Scotch lineage. John Wright removed from the Old North state to Maury county, Tennessee, where he became a well-to-do farmer as well as an honored pioneer settler of the state. After a time he took up his abode in Giles county, where he lived to an advanced age, lacking only a few months of being a centenarian at the time of his death.[1]


According to a news clipping from The Pulaski Citizen, Thursday, April 4, 1872, John Wright was 97 years old. This would place his birth year about 1775. According to the 1850 census for District 14, Giles, Tennessee, he was born at North Carolina and his birth year was about 1776. In the 1860 and 1870 censuses for Tennessee, John was born about 1777.


  • John Wright was living at Chatham County, North Carolina during the 1810 census. He owned one slave.[2]
  • John was living at Giles, Tennessee during the 1820 census.[3] His household included two boys age 10 to 15, three girls under 10, his wife, and himself.
  • John was living at Giles, Tennessee during the 1830 census.[4]
  • John was living at Giles, Tennessee during the 1840 census.[5]
  • John was living at District 14, Giles, Tennessee during the 1850 census.[6]
  • John was living at Northern Subdivision, Giles, Tennessee during the 1860 census.[7]
  • John was living at District 7, Maury Tennessee during the 1870 census.[8]


John Wright married Nancy McIntyre about 1788. Based on census records, their children were born about the following years based on the censuses noted:

In the 1850 census for Giles, Tennessee, three women, who could be either daughters or grand daughters were living with John Wright; they were Catharine Farley, Margaret Wright, and Mary Wright.


John was a Tennessee early resident and farmer.


John died about 1873 at Maury County, Tennessee.
