Joshua was born about 1762. He passed away in 1807. Baptised in Shipdham, Norfolk.

Research Note

Joshua WRIGHT's name is quite common and he is not in the Dereham register so must have been born in another parish The most likely match is a boy baptised in Shipdham, Norfolk in 1761, the son of James WRIGHT and Mary. Shipdham is only about 4 miles south of Dereham. If so, JAMES WRIGHT is the 4x great-grandfather of David Wright!
The parish records for East Dereham were transcribed and indexed by a Rector there in the 1840s and both the indexes and the register entries are on microfilm at the Norfolk Records Office.
From these we learn that Joshua Henry was the son of JOSHUA WRIGHT who was living in East Dereham by 1782. We have an entry in the Burial Register for East Dereham in 1807:
Wright. Joshua Wright (Married Man) was buried May 1st 1807, aged 47 years. This means he was born around 1760 and seems likely that he moved from the next-door parish of Shipdham, where a Joshua WRIGHT was baptised on 14 Sept 1761, son of JAMES and MARY WRIGHT. If so, this James and Mary Wright are David's 4x great grandparents. There are other entries in the Shipdham baptism register for children of James and Mary which suggest that Joshua was one of their youngest children:
Henry Wright — baptised 23 May 1749
Anne Wright — baptised 12 May 1751
John Wright — baptised 13 Nov 1758
Joshua Wright baptised 14 Sept 1761
It looks as if the family moved elsewhere between 1752 and 1758 - or any children born in that period died before baptism. Unfortunately, the early parish registers for Shipdham seem to have been badly damaged so are not made available even on microfilm, so I have not tracked down a marriage for James and Mary, and her maiden name is not given in Joshua's baptism record.
But moving on to JOSHUA WRIGHT (1761-1807) we do have his marriage recorded in the St Nicholas Church East Dereham Marriage Register for 1762 (page 22, entry no. 63) which states (with the handwritten part of the entry in italics):
Joshua Wright & Ann Leake both single & of this Parish were Married in this Church by Banns This Fifteenth Day of November in the Year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty-two By me George Paley Curate
This Marriage was solemnized between Us
{The Mark of Joshuah X Wright
{The Mark of Ann X Leak
In the Presence of
{Mary Smyth
{James Philoe
From this we know that both Joshua and Ann were illiterate, and that Ann's surname appears with two different spellings on the one Register entry! Later, in baptism entries for many of her children, her maiden name is written as Lake.
According to the Register Index, Joshua's wife, ANN LEAKE was baptised in East Dereham in 1762, but I cannot find an entry in the Baptism Register itself (which is extremely hard to read). From the Baptism Records themselves, it seems that they had at least 7 or 8 children, and some of the entries are very revealing:
1784: [Joshua Henry Son of Joshua & Ann Wright born the 21st baptised privately July 2nd a pauper,
(This page of the register has either been damaged and reinserted or is very tightly bound and most of the names on the left edge are either missing or are hidden in the binding— 'Henry' is obvious, but there would be space for him to be Joshua Henry, the given names noted later in the story and as appear on his death certificate,)
1786: Jane Daughter of Joshua & Ann Wright born Nov 27th baptised privately Nov 29th
1788; Ann Daughter of Joshua Wright & Ann his Wife born Sept 21st 1788 baptised privately sept 27th 1788.
1791: Hester Daughter of Joshua & Ann Wright (late Ann Lake) born April 24th baptised publicly May 8th, 1791, a Pauper (buried 25 May 1791, 'a pauper')
1792: Hester Daughter of Joshua & Ann Wright, late Lake, born Sept 9th baptised publicly Sept 26th. [Is this the 'Esther Wright, infant daughter of Joshua & Ann Wright' buried July 4' 1795 or did they have another baby in 1795 who is not recorded in the Dereham baptism register?]
1796: Josaphat Son of Josepjat corrected to Joshua Wright & Ann his Wife, late Lake, born Dec 31st 1795, baptised January 2. (Is this the 'Joshua, infant son of Joshua & Ann Wright buried Oct 26 1796’, perhaps using the everyday form of his name?)
1797: Joshua son of Joshua Wright & Ann his wife (late Lake) born Sept 10th, [bapt] Sept 13th
These entries tell us that JOSHUA WRIGHT and ANN (nee LEAKE) were paupers for at least some of the years during which their children were born. The fact that they were baptised in St Nicholas church, East Dereham indicates that the family stayed in the town rather than being sent to Gressenhall Workhouse (opened in 1777 for paupers of the 51 parishes of Mitford & Launditch Districts)- East Dereham did not separate from these Districts until an Act of Parliament passed in 1801, and had its own workhouse pre-1777 and from 1801 to 1836.
We also learn that several children died as babies (very common then). I wonder if another son was named Joshua in 1797 because by then Joshua Henry (age 13) had left home to seek his fortune in London and thus passed out of the world of his parents and the rest of the family?
JOSHUA WRIGHT (snr) died in East Dereham in 1807 and was buried there on 1st May. ANN Wright (nee LEAKE / LAKE) died there in 1821 and her burial is recorded in a rather bleak entry in the new-style Register book with columns for name, abode, date of burial and age: Ann Wright Pauper Dereham Feb 4 age 59
