James was born at Bengall Farm, near Lochmaben in Dumfriesshire, in July 1850[1], the 7th child (of 9 surviving) of William Wright and Jane (Janet) Bell. He married Margaret Deborah Dinwoodie in Lochmaben in September 1878[2]. On the death of his father in 1875 James's elder brother Thomas became proprietor of Bengall Farm and, as a young man, James started out as an engineer or draughtsman. He later became a flesher (butcher) and subsequently was the owner of a successful butcher business. He had probably retired by the time of the 1911 census[3] census because he is described as a man of "private means", and in 1912 the family moved into a new home, Lake House, in Lochmaben. James passed away there in 1918.
