Jim was a slave who was impressed by agents of the Confederate government to perform work on fortifications near Richmond, Virginia, from November 1862 to January 1863. During that time, Jim worked 29 days, for which his owner, John B. Wright, received $16 per month, for a total of $15.46 received. Jim appears on Payroll 695 for slaves impressed from Nelson County, Virginia.[1]
The year of Jim's birth is estimated based on the fact that his owner, John B. Wright, was shown holding only one slave on the 1860 slave schedule, a 26 year-old male which probably represents Jim. [2]
