Biography

William was born in 1885. He was the son of William Wroe and Ellen Blore. He passed away in 1956. [1]



b Wooleybridge, Hollingworth, Nr. Mottram in Longdendale, Cheshire on 11.3.1885. (b Hollingworth on 1911 census). Registered < Jun 1885 as Willie at Ashton under Lyme[parents Wroe/Blore]. 1891 census at 52 Wooley Bridge Rd, Glossop, Hadfield: William Wroe[49, labourer, b Delph, Yorks???); Ellen Wroe[46, wife, weaver, b Mottram]; Emily Wroe[19, daughter, cotton weaver, b Wooleybridge]; Henrietta Wroe[17, daughter, cotton weaver, b Wooleybridge]; Willie Wroe [6, b Wolleybridge]. 1901 census at 13 ?Elgin St., Staley Bridge at daughter, Emily’s house: Lot Beswick[30, head, engraver in calico printers, b Glossop]; Emily Beswick, wife, cotton weaver, b Hadfield]; Harry Beswick[4, son, b Stalybridge]; William Wroe[59, father in law, labourer in cotton mill, b Pendleton]; Ellen Wroe[57, mother in law, b Mottram]; William Wroe[16, brother in law, labourer in print works, b Hollingworth]. In 1911 Bill Wroe[27, labourer for calico printers] was at 15 Yorkshire St. Accrinton(now Lancashire Roofing, - a short Victorian Terrace just off Belfield Rd.) with his sister, Emily Beswick(nee Wroe, 39, housekeeper) and her husband, Lot Beswick (foreman Pentographer – possibly was at Broad Oak printworks): and their son Harry, 14, calico printer. m Mary Ellen Wade at St. Johns, Baxenden in 1912. Children: 1. Ernest Wroe (1912-1993 b&d Baxenden; he probably married Frances Ann Jones in 1940 in Burnley); 2. Wm. Wade Wroe(1914-2003 b Accrington, d Blackburn); married Jean Docherty at Wesley Chapel, Abbey St., Accrington in 1946. Could find no children. He died in 2003 in Blackburn. Jean died 6.4.2015 in Wellfield Nursing Home in Whalley Road, Accrington and was buried at St. Johns Baxenden on 23.4.2015; 3. Ellen Wroe (1920-1977 b Baxenden, d Crewe); married Walter Jones in 1945 at St. John's, Baxenden, children, Michael[1954, Crewe], Anthony[1956, Crewe] and Heather[1960, Crewe]; 4. Hilda Wroe (1922-2015, b&d Accrington); married Richard Haworth in 1945 at St. John's, Baxenden, children, Peter[1946, Accrington], Linda[1948, Accrington] and Shiela Janet[1963, Accrington]; 5. James Frederick Wroe (1929-2017 b Accrington, d Chesterfield - he married Winifred Mary Bamber[b 1933,Accrington] in 1953 in Accrington; children, Stephen J[1954, Clitheroe] and Christopher[1959, Accrington]). In 1921 census, William[36, out of work labourer] was at 3 Collier St., Baxenden with wife Mary Ellen[33] and children, Ernest[8], William W[6] and Ellen[1]. In 1939 Wm. [road labourer]was in Accrington (Bramwood Cottage, Hollins Lane, Accrington) with wife, Mary Ellen[no occupation], son William Wade Wroe(1914, hot stenter, machine calico works, single) and daughter Ellen Wroe[18.6.1920, bakery table, single] 2 others whose records are closed (presumably Hilda[now open, cake makers assistant] and James Frederick). Died Accrington on 22.11.1956 aged 71. He joined army in 1903 but bought himself out with £1 a few days later[attested on 14,4,1903, discharged 21.4.03.]: he was 5ft. 2.5", 112 lbs, 31.5" chest, brown hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion, birthmark on left shin; father was Wm. Wroe of 15 Elgin St. Staley Bridge. He joined the army for WW1 and was a prisoner of war in 1918(unwounded) in Gieseen Camp in NW Germany, captured at Jeancourt, France. - he was from the 15th Entrenching Battalion - home address given as 3 Collier St. Baxenden.
