Biography

Although census records sometime gives his birthplace as Painesville, Ohio, William's Civil War pension files are one source that give his birthplace as Canada. Given details known about other family members, Canada is his likely birthplace.
After the Civil War, he moved west, and is listed in the 1870 census as living in Lake County, Colorado as a miner. In 1885, he lives with his family in Park County, Colorado, with the occupation of "ranchman." In 1888, he moved the family to Rifle, Colorado, where they joined in-laws and other relatives.
William served as a private in Company G, 2nd Ohio Cavalry, enlisting on Mar. 28, 1864 and mustered out Aug. 30, 1865 at Camp Dennison, O., by order of War Department. In Rifle, he was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, and he outlived most of the other members of the organization.
William was a successful rancher, who lived the rest of his life in Rifle, Colorado and is buried in Rifle's Rose Hill cemetery.
