Sheffie was born in Virginia to Jessie and Hannah Wyatt. He was the eldest son of at least 9 children. Jessie owned his farm of 86 acres in Totuaro, Virginia. Hannah was a homemaker. According to the 1910 US Census, the Wyatt children, all born in Virginia, were: Sheffie, born in 1887; daughter Amie born in 1893; daughter Martha, born in 1894; son Jessie, Jr. born in 1895; son Arthur, born in 1896; daughter Louiese, born in 1897; son Johnson, born in 1898; daughter Rose, born in 1900; and son John, born 1902. The family was listed as being Mulatto on this Census.
According to the 1900 US Census, Jessie and Hannah had been married for 18 years. Jessie was born in August, 1856 and Hannah was born in May, 1861. Hannah had had 11 pregnancies, 8 children survived. Neither parent could read or write. Both were born in Virginia.
Sheffie registered for the draft on June 5, 1917. He listed his birthdate as October 1, 1888. He was employed as a clerk at Charles Perkinsons. He had a wife and two children, listed as dependents. He was described as being African and of medium height with a stout build, brown eyes and black hair.
According to the 1930 US Census, Sheffie was a farmer. He and wife Irene (nee Jones) had 5 children, all born in Virginia. They were son James, born in 1915; daughter Pearl M., born in 1917; son Johnson, born in 1919; son William H., born in 1924; and daughter Daisy M., born in 1926.
The death certificate for Sheffie lists Sept. 30, 1889 as his birthdate. His cause of death was chronic myocarditis due to arteriosclerosis. He is buried in the Crestview Memorial Park in South Hill, Virginia.
There are several birthdates listed for Sheffie. I have chosen to use the one from his death certificate.
