Biography

Marcus was born in 1796. He was a cabinet maker after escaping slavery and served as a Fifer under Captain Benjamin W. Sanders in the War of 1812 [1] [2] [3] [4].

Last Will and Testament: In the name of God Amen. I McGilbra Wyatt of Marshall County in the State of Kentucky being weak in body but of sound mind and disposing memory. Knowing the certainty of death, and the uncertainty of life, do hereby make this my last will and testament as follows: Item 1st, I will my bo(d)dy to the grave and my soul to God who gave it. Item 2, I will and bequeath to my beloved wife Lucretia Wyatt two hundred dollars in cash, and all an so much of my perishable property as she may wish for maintenance through life, and also the land on which I now reside for and during her life. Item 3rd, I will land bequeath to my daughter Sarah Jane Cox and hundred dollars in cash to be made and of my goods and chattels at the death of my said wife; and also one cupboard, bureau, bed, bedstead and bedding at the death of my said wife. Item 4th, I will and bequeath to my daughter Catherine Estes at the death of my said wife, one bed, bedstead and bedding. Item 5th, I will and bequeath to my daughter Nancy Baggels at the death of my said wife one bed and bedding. Item 6th, I will and bequeath to my son William A. Wiatt my interest in one yoke of oxen now in his possession and seventy five dollars in cash to be made out of my goods and chattels at the death of my said wife. Item 7th, I will and bequeath to my son George W. Wyatt the quarter section of land and which he now resides, the same having been purchased by me of M.E. Stone for him said George W. Wyatt and {illegible} by said Stone to him and one dollar and no more at the death of my said wife. Item 8th, I will and bequeath to my son Rayborn Wyatt one dollar and no more at the death of my said wife, he with my other two sons aforesaid, having heretofore been properly provided for {illegible} as otherwise shown herein. Item 9th, I will and bequeath to my sons-in law Albert J. Estes, James M. Cox, Richard Baggell one dollar each, and no more at the death of my said wife. Item 10th, I will and bequeath to my three daughters aforesaid and to William A and Rayborn Wiatt equally, all my perishable property, cash on hand, not otherwise disposes of by my said wife. George W. Wyatt my other son having been already and fully provided for. Lastly, I hereby appoint Willis Stone and Philander Palmer executors to this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other former wills by me made, in wirint whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 25th day of January A.D. 1858. Signed, sealed, acknowledged and delivered to the clerk of the Marshall County Court for keeping, in the presence of J.C. Gilbert and G.W. Slaughter [5]

Founding father of Wyatt family of Marshall County, born as McGilberry Wyatt in Martin County, North Carolina. Son of William Wyatt and Grandson of Solomon Wyatt.

Came to Hopkinsville with sister, Nancy, as runaways (slaves) in 1813. Served as Fifer Major in 17th Infantry in War of 1812.

Married February 20, 1816 in Christian County. Moved to Marshall County 1822, changed name to McGilbra.

He was buried on Wyatt Farm about a mile north of this spot. She was buried Mt. Vernon Cemetery. They had 11 children.
