Frances was born about 1832 in Nassau, Bahamas.

At the time of the 1861 census she was a lodger in St Giles, London, England, and worked as a shell manufacturer.^[1]

By 1871 she had moved to Eastrington, Yorkshire, where she worked as a schoolmistress and lodged with the Stogdale family.^[2] Frances was a private school teacher in 1881.^[3]
