Brown served as a Private in the 6th Michigan Infantry and Heavy Artillery 1861 to 1865. He was wounded in his hip during an assault at Port Hudson. According to my Mother Lucille Wynne Gibson he was captured for a short time. It was long enough for him to wedge a spoon between his teeth and avoid dying of Lockjaw,
