Biography

Kerenhappuch "Kerry" Bocking was born in 1803 in Bulmer, Essex, England to Samuel Bocking and Mary.

Keren-Happuch Bocking, daughter of Samuel & Mary, was christened on 25 Sep 1803 in Bulmer.^[1][2]

Kerenhappuch married James Spalding in or before 1822.

• Unable to locate a record of the marriage, but their two youngest children were born after civil birth registration was implemented and their registrations confirm her maiden name: Emma has mother's maiden name listed as Bocking, and John has it mistranscribed as Borking.

Kerenhappuch and James had at least seven children:

1. James Spalding (1822-1900)
2. Edward Spalding (1824-1895)
3. George Spalding (1828-)
4. Susannah (Spalding) Carter (1831-1906)
5. William Spalding (1834-1897)
6. Emma Spalding (1840-)
7. John Spalding (1843-1860)

In addition, they seem to have raised a granddaughter:

1. Susannah/Susan (Chinery) (Carter) White AKA Tuffin (1847-1909) [Her second husband used both the surnames White and Tuffin]

• It's a bit unclear how exactly she was related - she was born out of wedlock to Maria Chinery (c1825-) - perhaps one of their sons was her father? Maria Chinery had a couple of children out of wedlock, and then married John Messent in 1859.

In 1841 Kerenhappuch Spalding (age 38) lived at Bulmer Tye in Bulmer with her husband James (40) and six children: James (18), Edward (16), George (14), Susanah (11), William (6), and Emma (1).^[3]

In 1851 Kerenhappuck Spalding (age 48) lived at Church Road in Bulmer with her husband James (55, Gardeners Laborer) and five children: George (23, Ag Lab), Susannah (19, Straw Plaiter), William (16, Ag Lab), Emma (10, Scholar), and John (7, Scholar), as well as granddaughter Susannah Chinery (3).^[4]

Kerenhappuch's husband passed away in 1858.

In 1861 Karrenhappuch Spalding (age 60, Formerly Gardeners Wife) lived at Church Road in Bulmer with three of her children: Edward (36, Agricultural Labourer), William (26, Agricultural Labourer), and Emma (21, Straw Plaiter), as well as granddaughter Susan E Terney [Chinery] (13, Straw Plaiter).^[5]

In 1871 Kerenhappuch Spalding (age 72, Straw Plainter) lived at The Tye in Bulmer with her son Edward (48, Groom).^[6]

In 1881 Kerenhappuch Spalding (age 78) lived at Tye in Bulmer with her son Edward (52, Groom).^[7]

Kerenhappuch Spalding passed away in 1886, aged 84 years. Her death was registered in Sudbury, Suffolk [the RD for Bulmer] in the last quarter of the year.^[8]
