Biography

Elizabeth Yale was probably born on 20 Jul 1673, in Wallingford, New Haven County, Connecticut Colony. She was the daughter of Thomas Yale and his first wife, Rebecca Gibbard.[1] She may have been baptized on 25 Jul 1673.[2]

Elizabeth married the widower William Chittenden as his second wife, possibly in Guilford, New Haven County, Connecticut Colony in about 1705, since their first child is said to have been born there in 1706.[3] They are believed to have had four children:

  1. William Chittenden (b. 1706)
  2. Rebecca Chittenden (b. 1708, d. 6 Mar 1712)
  3. Jared Chittenden (b. 1710, d. 18 Mar 1712)
  4. Thankful Chittenden (b. 1711)

Elizabeth is said to have died on 1 Aug 1712, possibly in childbed, although no documentation for this has been presented. She was presumably buried in the Guilford Village Green Cemetery, where her husband was later buried, and her grave possibly relocated with his to the Alderbrook Cemetery.[4]

Research Notes

Date of Birth: The Barbour Collection transcript for Wallingford shows two records for the birth of Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Yale: 20 Jul 1673, for "Elizabeath," from the Wallingford Proprietors' Records, p. 15; and 25 Jul 1673, for "Elizabeth," from Volume 1, p. 48, of the Wallingford Land Records (see citations above). On the assumption that she may have been born on the 20th and baptized on the 25th, the earlier date has been used here in the data field, but noted as uncertain. Jacobus, in Families of Ancient New Haven, Volume 8, p. 2030, cited the Wallingford Land records for the date of 25 Jul 1673, and provided a date of July 1673 from the New Haven Vital Records.[5]

Marriage, Children, Death: Find A Grave: Memorial #117632147 provides the information about Elizabeth's marriage, children and death, but without documentation. There is no photo of a gravestone on the memorial. This memorial seems to depend largely on Talcott's unsourced 1882 genealogy: Chittenden Family: William Chittenden of Guilford, Conn., and His Descendants, "William Chittenden," no. 13, p. 16. It should be noted that Talcott was unsuccessful in identifying Elizabeth's parentage. Anderson-27719 18:02, 7 May 2022 (UTC)

I'm not able to edit, but I found an additional source to confirm the marriage to William Chittenden, Families of Ancient New Haven (Jacobus) - Jacobus, Donald Lines, compiler, Families of Ancient New Haven [CT] (Baltimore, Genealogical Pub. Co., 1974) - v.8, p. 2031. (https://archive.org/details/familiesofancien00jaco_2/page/2030/mode/2up)
