He preferred being called Gus.

1st Marriage to Mollie Long Murray

Sometime in 1905 in Titus County, Texas, Gus Yanke married the widow Mrs. Molly Long Murray, daughter of John Thomas Long, (10 Apr 1841 - 27 May 1907), and Celia Temperance Ganbell Long, (10 Jan 1852 - 31 Mar 1939). and former husband of Herbert Lafayette Murray, (1855 - Mar 1903).

Shortly before their 2nd child, Bonner, was born Mollie and Gus divorced. Growing up both boys had little contact with their father. From their youth both boys were raised as part of the Murray family of Marshall, Texas and adopted that surname as their identity. After their mother married Adolphus Davis source documents reported him as their father.

Divorce from Mollie M. Yanke

In late 1909 Gus and Mollie divorce. On the 1910 census Mollie states to the enumerator that she is divorced. Mollie's newborn son has not received a name, he is simply identified by the initials, "H.L. Yanke". Gus Yanke does not appear in the 1910 Census. However on the 1920 Census he states to the enumerator that he is a widower.

2nd Marriage to Florence Little (Mintz) Atkinson

Sometime between 18 April 1930, the date of the 1930 Census, and his death, 14 Jul 1933, Gus Yanke married Florence L. Atkinson.

Occupation

In 1900 Gus is 36 years old and has moved to Marshall, Harrison, Texas to live and work with Charley Fredrick Studer, (28 Oct 1869 - 3 Jul 1951) a German speaking immigrant from Bern, Switzerland who operates a pottery company.

in 1920 Gus is employed as a Potter and operating a pottery store.

Death

On 14 Jul 1933 in Marshall, Titus County Texas, Gus Yanke died. He was 69 years old, The medical examiner determined that the immediate cause of death was chole cystitis, also known as ruptured gall bladder.

The Certificate of Death lists his wife as Mrs G, A. Yanke, this is his 3rd wife: Florence Little Mintz Atkinson Yanke. The informant on the death certificate is her adopted daughter, Hilda Marie Atkinson .

Burial

The Certificate of Death does not say where Gus Yanke's remains were to be buried. It only states that his remains were shipped to Texarkana, Arkansas. It is not known where his remains were laid to rest.

No F. A. G. memorial has been created for Gus Yanke.

Funeral notice

“The body of Gus Yanke, 69, who died here Friday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Grubb, 1101 East Burleson Street, was taken to Texarkana Sunday morning for burial. “Pioneer Dies at Home on West Fifth street After Comparatively Brief Illness. Mrs. Margaret Mary Yanke of 1511 West Fifth Street, on of the oldest residents of Des Moines, died at her home yesterday after a comparatively brief illness, at an advanced age. Mrs. Yank was born in Hanover, Germany, and she was one of the pioneers of this community. She and her husband celebrated their golden wedding anniversary about eight years ago, and Mr. Yanke died six years ago. She is survived by three children, Henry Yanke of 1621 Twelfth street, Mrs. Sophia Gruening of 1511 Fifth Street and August Yanke of Thornton, Texas, upon whose arrival in the city, if he is able to come, depends the hour for the funeral which will be announced later. Mrs. Yanke was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran church. She belonged to that company of energetic and capable pioneers, including among others also the Youngerman families, who helped build up this city. For many years she resided at 623 West Second street and her family was one of those who there formed a center of one of the uplifting and up-building influences to which the credit is due for the advancement of the community. When she first came here she and her family resided in a log cabin and she enjoyed and endured with courage and cheerfulness the hardships of the pioneer life. “Complaining of a pain in his side yesterday morning, Henry Yanke, who had been working in the yard at his home, Thirty-sixth and Grand Avenue, entered his house. He died immediately upon entering the house. Dr. Daniel F. Crowley, who was called, pronounced death due to paralysis of the heart. Mr. Yanke is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mary Yanke O’Connell, a son, Harold Yanke, and one brother, August Yanke of Winfield, Texas. The deceased, who was 54 years old, had been a resident of this city during his entire life. He was connected with Jewett Typewriter company for more than twenty years and recently had been in the service of the Teetor Adding Machine Company. “ Marriages, Births and Deaths. Mary Yanke. Died At Des Moines. Oct 1, 1891, at 8 a.m. Mary, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Yanke, of 623 West Second street, from a second paralytic stroke. Miss. Yanke had just convalesced from a long and severe attack of typoid fever, and her friends expected she would be up an around in a few days, but just when she had conquered the dread disease, she received a second paralytic stroke last Saturday morning and passed peacefully away in five days. Miss Yanke was born April 8, 1856, in Buffalo, N.Y., and was in her 36 th year when she died. She had a paralytic stroke when she was 16 years old, from which she never fully recovered, but lived, not withstanding her infirmity, a most devoted Christian life, and loving and affectionate daughter, whose friends were without number and her parental devotion without a parallel.
