Biography
John (Yarborough) Yarbrough was a North Carolina colonist.
John Yarbrough (or Yarborough) was born August 5, 1717 in Wake County, North Carolina. He was a son of Thomas Allen Yarbrough and Mary Abigail Whitehead. [1][2]
Around 1738, he married Elizabeth Hudson in Cumberland County, North Carolina. They had the following children:[1][3]
- George Yarbrough, Sr. (1743-1798)
- Littleton Yarbrough (1748-1814)
- Elizabeth (1755-1838)
- Nimrod Billington Yarbrough (1760-1847)
- Judith Yarbrough (1760-1849)
- Samuel William (1760-1835)
- Moses Gilmer (1765-1766)
- William Yarborough (abt.1768-bef.1842)
- Catherine Yarbrough (1770-1815)
- Frances Gay (1770-1820)
John passed away on 13 Aug 1777 in Franklin County, North Carolina. The location of his grave is not known.[4]
Research Notes
The John Yarbrough documented in Franklin County, North Carolina was still alive in 1789. John Yarbrough purchased 140 acres of land in Franklin County, North Carolina on the 27th day of November 1789 which was noted as bounding on the lands of Jeffrey's, Reuben Morgan, Jordan Rowland, John Hunt, and John Elliott.[5] He perhaps died before 1796. On the 21st day of November 1796, Littleton Yarbrough and Nimrod Yarbrough of Franklin County sold that 140 acre tract to Thomas Youngblood.[6]
Possible conflated children:
If the Elizabeth Yarbrough, who wrote her will in 1802, was his wife, neither a son named George Yarbrough, William Yarbrough, or Samuel William nor a daughter named Frances Gay were recorded among her children listed in her Last Will and Testament.

It appears that this John Yarbough's (Yarbrough-26) profile is conflated with the wrong children given the fact that he was born in Edgecombe, North Carolina, and connected to Thomas Allen Yarbrough who was the son of John Yarbrough. It appears contributors have just added the same birth date to Yarbrough-26 as the documented birth date of Yarbrough-240.
Yarbrough-240 is the son of Thomas Yarbrough who was the son of Richard Yarbrough not John Yarbrough, and was never documented in Cumberland County, North Carolina. Also his wife could not have been Elizabeth Hudson the daughter of William Hudson who died in 1761 in Northampton, North Carolina. In order to marry someone in Cumberland County, North Carolina, they had to have been living in or around that area. Yarbrough-240 was never documented in Cumberland County.
Cumberland County was a far distance from Franklin County as can be seen on the The North Carolina County 1780 county map.
The Yarbrough families should not be further conflated so that some descendant has to keep sorting them out at a later date.

The children listed on Geni.com, and added to the biography are not supported by any sources. A George Yarbrough born in Dinwiddie County (created from Prince George in 1753), Virginia could not be the son of the John Yarbrough who purportedly died in Franklin County, North Carolina in 1777. That John Yarbrough along with his father, Thomas Yarbrough, was documented in Amelia County by 1740. Also, note that no documents found on his father, Thomas Yarbrough, shows the middle name Allen. No tax record for Amelia County, Virginia, and the North Carolina counties of Bute, Franklin and Warren County recorded a George Yarbrough.
Family trees listed on sites like Geni.com, Familysearch.org, and Ancestry.com that do not have credible first-hand sources should not be used as documentation to verify a child.
