Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Ben Yarbrough was a Virginia colonist.

Based on the 1788 Caroline County Personal Property Tax List Benjamin Yarbrough was born about 1767.[1] According to court records he is the son of a brother of Henry Yarbrough.

Henry's brother, James Yarbrough, died before May of 1777. On the 11th of May 1777, by a motion of Mary Yarbrough, Administration was granted her on the Estate of Jas. Yarbrough Dec'd. [2]

At a court held for Caroline County, Virginia on the 14th day of August 1777, Roger Quarles was appointed guardian to Benj. Yarbrough for the special purpose of seeing the lands divided between him & his Uncle.[1] On the same date, Sam. Harvey, Benj. Tompkin & Robt Tomkin are appointed to divide the land between Benj. Yarbrough & Harry [Henry?] Yarbrough according to Chs Yarbrough's will. The lands of Chs. Yarbrough deceased between Henry and Benj. Yarbrough were returned at a court held the 8th day of January 1778, and ordered to be recorded.[1] Henry Yarbrough was the son of Charles Yarbrough; therefore, Benjamin would not have been the son of the Charles Yarbrough born in 1710.

Benjamin's mother married William Almond who was taxed on 330 acres on the 1789 Land Tax up to the year 1793 when the Caroline County Land Tax alterations recorded that William Almond transferred 220 acres to Benjamin Yarbrough.[3] Of that 220 acres, Benjamin conveyed to Elizabeth Cearnal [sp] 19 acres.

Benj'm. Yarbrough of Caroline County, Virginia set his hand and seal to his last Will and Testament on the 10th day of December 1795 making special bequests:

  • I lend to my Mother one half of lands during her natural life
  • at her decease to return to my brother Charles with the other half which I hereby devise to him his heirs and assigns forever;
  • in case my Brother Charles should die without heir then one third of the said property goes to Pleasant Winston's child (my nephew) and the other two thirds to Mr. Almonds children which he had by my mother.[4]

Benjamin died after the 10th day of December 1795 (date will was written) and before the 2nd day of May 1800 (date will was recorded.)
