Biography

Mary Jane was born in 1834 in Pike County, Georgia to Dr. Henry S. Yarbrough and Sarah K. Harper Yarbrough. Mary would have been one of the two females under 5 in the household of Henry S. "Yarborough" on the 1840 Census for Pike County, Georgia.[1] The 1850 Census enumerated Mary J. as age 15 in the household.[2]

She married William T. Jackson the 30th of January 1853 in Pike County, Georgia.[3] On the 1860 Census, William T. Jackson's household consisted of

  • wife, Mary J., age 25,
  • son, Robert F., age 6,
  • daughter, Sarah J. M., age 4,
  • son, James W., age 1.[4]

Six children were born to Mary Jane and William T. before William's death in 1864. She was enumerated as head of household age 36 in 1870.[5] The children were listed as:

  • Robert T., age 16
  • Sarah J., age 14
  • James W., age 11
  • Henry S., age 9 [ born 5 Nov 1859 according to Death Certificate]
  • Martha F., age 7
  • Mary W., age 5

On the 3rd day of October 1864, Mrs. Mary J. Jackson was appointed temporary Administratrix of the estate of William T. Jackson, late of Pike County, deceased. [6] Mary J. Jackson filed a bond for Administration of the Estate of William T. Jackson in August 1866.[7] At the court held the 16th of June 1866, Mary J. Jackson showed that William T. Jackson departed this life on the 20th of August 1864 leaving her as his next of kin. She entered a Petition at the August term 1866 showing she had six minor children, orphans of the deceased W. T. Jackson, and desired a a portion of the household and kitchen furniture may be set apart for her & the family, and that a twelve month support be set apart.[8]

She passed away in 1872, and was buried in the Yarbrough Cemetery in Williamson, Pike County, Georgia.[9]
