William James Woods (otherwise known as Yarwood), was born in Lower Portland Head, New South Wales, Australia on September 27, 1833. William was the son of Thomas Woods (also known as Yarwood) and Sarah Mary Woods (née Stubbs).

William married Annie Keenan at Rose Hill Presbyterian Church, Lower Portland Head, New South Wales, Australia on March 5, 1858 and the two had eleven children together.
