Something of the nature of Isaac Yates' character and personality has been preserved to the present time. Nellie Cudney knew Margaret Yates, a daughter-in-law of Isaac, and states that "Grandma Margaret said Isaac was a wonderful man, being kind to everyone. She and Rev. William went to Indiana and stayed two years with the Isaac Yates families. . ." Another cousin, Valeta Wisuri states in a letter that she visited Mrs. Horace C. Yates of Normal, Illinois, who had many Yates mementoes, and that "she even had a picture of our known Isaac, taken just after the Civil War. He was a very sturdily built man and had twinkling eyes. . .in an old [autograph book] Isaac Yates himself wrote the following: Live this day as was the last and live not too fast And always live to some profit and never waste time in profligate.
