Beatrice (Bea) Yates Dollar Rhodes Bishop, of Braxton, age 90, passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2012, at Briar Hill Rest Home in Florence.
Ms. Bea grew up during the great depression and she left a legacy of Christian values, love of family, tenacity, hard work, self-reliance, thrift, and perseverance. Her favorite poem "Don't Quit" illustrates her attitude of life.
In addition to raising six children, Ms. Bea worked for 34 years as a bookkeeper/cashier at Jitney Jungle. She was also very active for many years in her beloved Gum Springs Baptist Church. She was a friend to many and gave of her time and talents to her community and family.
She was preceded in death by her father, Esco Yates; mother, Thelma McDermit Yates Manning; stepmother, Verdee Robertson Yates White; and stepfather; Vernon "Poppa" Manning; husbands, John M. Dollar, Walter Rhodes and Boyd Bishop; brothers, Woodard Yates and James Yates; and son, James S. "Bo" Dollar. Ms. Bea is survived by five children, Johnny K. Dollar (Sandra) of Brandon, Melba Lichte of Florence, Karen Kay Alford (Ralph) of Ridgeland, Wayne Dollar (Anita) of D'Lo and Robert Dollar (Cheryl) of Pearl and daughter-in-law, Faye Dollar of Terry. She leaves 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family thanks the ladies who cared for "Big Mamma" in her home and extended her stay there for several years. They would also like to thank the caregivers at Briar Hill Rest Home for their excellent care the last few months of her life.
Visitation was held at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, Hwy 13, Mendenhall from 3-5 p.m., Sunday, February 26, and Monday morning before the funeral. Funeral services were conducted by Brother Andy Gipson at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, February 27, 2012, at Colonial Chapel in Mendenhall with interment at Gum Springs Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were: Daniel Dollar, Samuel Dollar, Ken Dollar, Alex Slawson, Jules Perret and Jackie Harrell.
