Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Bartholomew Yates was a Virginia colonist.

Origin

Rev. Bartholomew Yates was a son of William Yates and Katherine Unknown, of Shackley, Donnington parish, England, was baptized August 24, 1676 [1].

Bartholomew Yates matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford, 16 March 1694/95 and obtained his BA there in 1698 [2].

He came to Virginia, February 2, 1700, and served first as minister of Sittenbourne and Kingston parishes. After three years he became minister of Christ Church, Middlesex county, and continued minister till his death.[3] In 1723 he was a member of the board of visitors of William and Mary College, and in 1729 was elected professor of divinity. He married Sarah, widow of Tobias Mickleborough. He died July 26, 1734, leaving three sons, Bartholomew, William and Robert, distinguished like himself for their piety and beneficence as ministers.[4][5]

Yates Family: After the death of Waddington, the French statesman, it was discovered that he was related to the Yates family in England, from which sprung the Jefferson county and Tidewater Yates of Virginia. Waddington was descended from the Penderells of Shropshire, England, who had hidden Charles II in the famous oak at Boscobel, two of whom had married Yates.

This led to tracing back the Yates family further than had been possible, and showed the connection between the Jefferson county family and that of Lower Virginia. The present representative of the Yates family in England is Francis Wm. Yates, of Capsallwood, Walnerhampton.

William Yates living at Shockerly, in the Parish of Donnington, England, in 1656, had issue by Catherine, his wife:

  1. John, born November 3, 1658.
  2. Margaret, born March 19, 1660.
  3. William, baptized December 10, 1661.
  4. Benjamin, baptized August 21, 1663.
  5. Samuel, baptized July 18, 1665.
  6. Frances, baptized September, 14, 1666.
  7. Richard, baptized June 19, 1669.
  8. John, baptized May 19, 1671.
  9. Robert, baptized October 30, 1673.
  10. Bartholomew, baptized August 24, 1676.

The latter named, baptized on St. Bartholomew's day. The above William Yates died in 1697, and his wife Catherine in October, 1706. This deduction comes from Rev. Mr. Aiglouby, of England, who was a Yates of Jefferson county, Va.-A. G. Grinnan.

Death and Burial

Bartholomew died on 26 July 1734 and was buried on 2 August 1734 at Christ Church Parish, Virginia Colony (p 190).[3][7].

A large tombstone was placed, by the parishioners, over the grave of the elder Bartholomew Yates, which is still in good order and the inscription legible.

Here lie the remains of the Rev. Bartholomew Yates, who departed this life the 26th day of July 1734, in the fifty-seventh year of his age. He was one of the visitors of William and Mary College, as also Professor of Divinity in that Royal Foundation. In the conscientious discharge of his duty few ever equalled him, none ever surpassed him. He explained the doctrine by his practice, and taught and led the way to heaven. Cheerfulness--the result of innocence--always sparked in his face, and, by the sweetness of his temper, he gained universal good-will. His consort enjoyed in him a tender husband, his childred an indulgent father, his servants a gentle master, his adquaintance a faithful friend. He was minister of this parish upward of thirty years; and, to perpetuate his memory, this monument is erected at the charge of his friends and parishioners.

The present representative of the Yates family in England is Francis Wm. Yates, of Capsallwood, Walnerhampton.

The area stated here as Capshallwood, Walnerhampton is a misspelling. It is: Codsall Wood, Wolverhampton.
