Biography

John Yate, Esq., son and heir of Thomas Yate, Esq., and his second wife Dorothy Stephens, was baptized at Hanney, Berkshire on 10 January 1612/3.[1][2][3]

John held lands in Lyford and Peasemore, Berkshire.[1]

Douglas Richardson gives just one wife for John - Elizabeth, whose family origins are not known.[1] Evidence points to there being two wives.

  • The 1665-6 Visitation of Berkshire, in a Tettershall pedigree, says his wife was "Mary Tettershall". This pedigree was signed by Mary's brother George, and it is hard to believe he would have made a mistake about his sister's marriage.[4]
  • 1658 probate information for John's father Thomas refers to Elizabeth Yate, mother and guardian ("curatrix") of John's children George and Elizabeth.[5][6] The 1653 record of the Interregnum Committee for Compounding relating to John Yate ("now dead") names his widow as Elizabeth.[7]
    • In 2020 David Boles suggested that Elizabeth's maiden name may be White, and he believes her to be the daughter of Richard White and Catherine Weston.[8][9] David Boles does not give firm evidence, and more research is needed to establish this connection.

John had four known children:

  • John, Esq.:[1][10][11][12] he was named as executor in the 1654 will of his grandfather Thomas Yate (which refers to him as "Gent."):[5][6] this suggests he was of age in 1654, and the likelihood is that his mother was Mary Tattershall
  • Thomas,[1] admitted to Gray's Inn 9 May 1663,[13] suggesting probable birth before 1645: he is not referred to in the will or probate record for his grandfather Thomas,[5][6] and it is not certain whether his mother was Mary Tattershall or Elizabeth
  • George, Gent.,[1] a minor in 1658:[10][11] his mother is named as Elizabeth in the probate record for his grandfather Thomas Yate[5][6]
  • Elizabeth,[1] a minor in 1658:[10][11] her mother is named as Elizabeth in the probate record for her grandfather Thomas[5][6]

Robert William Barnes names Mary Tattershall as mother of all John's children, mentioning, in his paragraph on John's son George, the possibility that Mary, as a recusant, may have used the first name Elizabeth as a disguise, meaning that John married only once.[10] There is no reliable evidence for this, and it seems unlikely. There is discussion in a 2020 blog post of David Boles, which refers among other things to the illegality of a false first name being used.[11] John's entry in the records of the Committee for Compounding states categorically that Elizabeth was not a recusant[7] and that seems fairly conclusive evidence that recusancy would not have been a reason for John's wife to try and disguise her name, making it even more unlikely that Mary Tattershall and Elizabeth were the same person.

John was identified as a recusant when he attempted to bid on some of his father's confiscated land in Lyford, Berkshire in 1652. His bid was denied.[1]

John died before 14 September 1653,[1] when claims were made on his estate.[7] His widow was still living in 1658.[1][5][6]
