Peter Yates was born circa 1765 and although he was very young, served as a soldier in the American Revolutionary War. Peter received bounty land based on the Act of August 20, 1781 where land was given for services performed during the war, to help pay off debts related to the American War for Independence. Cherokee lands used to create Franklin County on February 25, 1784, and encompassed parts of South Carolina and twelve counties in Georgia. [1]
Peter Yates is honored by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution[2], as DAR Ancestor #A207765. DAR records indicate that Peter died before January 4, 1826, in Clarke county, Georgia, created in 1801 by an act of the Georgia General Assembly on December 5. It was named for Revolutionary War hero Elijah Clarke and included 250 square miles (647.5 km2) that was formerly part of Jackson County. Peter's wife's name was Susannah (no maiden name given) Applications for membership in the society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of their son, John Yates, who married [Martha] "Patsey" Hinson.
