Biography

Jonathan Yates was born about 1713; however, his parentage is unknown.

Some genealogical websites, for example, Ancestry or Family Search, claim that Jonathan Yates is believed to be the son of John Yates, Jr. and Elizabeth Field in numerous family trees, but there is no documentation to support that claim on the parentage of Jonathan Yates.

Here is the transcription of the text in a marriage document of the original record in Greenwich, Rhode Island.

"Jonathan Yeats of [East] Greenwich in the County of Providence of ye Colony of Rhode Island &c. and Deborah Johnson of the Town County and Colony aforesaid Daughter of Elisha Johnson personally appeared the fourteenth Day of November Anno Domine 1737 and were Lawfully married by me John Fry, Justice"[1]

Jonathan and Deborah Yates had the following children.

  1. Benedict Yeats (1738)
  2. Elizabeth (Yeats) Johnson (1740 - 1810)
  3. Elisha Yeats (1743)
  4. Waitey (Yates) Johnson (1746 - 1809)

Jonathan Yeats died sometime before his widow, Deborah Yeats married her second husband, Elisha Johnson on 9 July 1750 in East Greenwich, Providence County, Rhode Island.[2]
