Henry Clay Yates was born in Stokes county in 1863 to Thomas and Christina Yates. His mother Christina passed away just two years later. Henry grew up in Beaver Island and later moved to Sauratown, where he worked on a local farm. It was around then that he met Nancy Lillie Fulton, later marrying her in 1889. Henry and his family moved to High Point around 1904, spending the next 44 years in the community. He worked in a local lumber mill (possibly Snow Lumber Co.) as a wood worker and laborer, as well as a carpenter in his later years. He passed away in 1948, not long after his 85th birthday. He was buried at Oakwood Memorial Cemetery in High Point.
