Born 1848, Copiah Co., MISS *.
Note: The birth date that is listed here for Joseph M. is only correct if he is found, in fact, to be the same Joseph M. on the Copiah Co 1850 census with Sara D. and Thomas D. Yates. The Sara could be our Sally Ainsworth. This probably is correct because in the 1880 Union Parrish census, Joseph is listed at age 31. However he lists his father as being born in "FRA" and his mother in "MS".
1850 Census - Place: , Copiah, Mississippi; Roll: M432_371; Page: 247; Image: 78.
1880 Census - Place: 5th Ward, Union, Louisiana; Roll: T9_473; Family History Film: 1254473; Page: 510.3000; Enumeration District: 89; Image: 0302. Note: He is shown on this census at the age of 31, born in MS. Occupation farmer. Father born in FRA, mother in MS. Shown with Arie Yates, age 19, born in LA. Occupation keeping house. Does not give her mother and father birth places. Also shows: Joe Cornelia, age 2, born in LA. Audnie G., age 8 M, born in LA. In this census it shows a Jefferson Yates two doors down. He is about 4 years older than Joseph and may be a brother. However he lists his parents being born in TN and KY. Maybe he is a cousin instead of a brother.
RESIDENCE In a letter from his great-granddaughter, Dalia Davis Wren, Joseph was probably a merchant. At one point he took his family to Jacksonville, FLA, where he operated a store.
DIED Nov 4, 1895, Bossier Parrish, LA. This date is based on the fact that his Obit was published on Thursday, Nov. 7, 1895. So, if he died Monday, that would have been Nov 4th. According to Joie Leslie, Her father Joe Yates died of Spinal Meningitis.
OBIT Bossier Parrish Banner, Nov 7, 1895 - Mr. J. M. Yates, a good man and clever gentleman, died at Haughton last Monday. He leaves a wife and three or four children.
Note: This Obit was not personally viewed. However, in conversation with Bossier Parrish Historian, Clifton Cardin, he confirmed the date Emailed the text to me.
BURIED Fillmore Cemetery in Haughton, LA.
Event: Land - 1 APR 1884 - 1548 Total Acres
Note: Father is possibly Thomas Daniel Yates of NC, born in 1804. Thomas Daniel Yates is shown in the 1850 Census for Copiah Co., Mississippi with Sara D (possibly our Sally Ainsworth) at 30, Isaac age 4, John S. age 10, Joseph M. age 2, and Thomas J. age 7. The Joseph M. could be our Joseph McAphee Yates. If it is, then he was born in Miss in the year 1848.
In addition Thomas D. is shown in the 1840 Census for Covington Co. Miss, and in the 1860 Census for Ashley Co., Ark.
In an E-mail from Deborah Yates-Bellante Joseph was named James by the Mormon church. She was told this by J.D.'s daughter, Martha Jean. However, she is not happy with the Mormon research.
On Bossierhistory.org they list a Yates, J.M. as having served jury duty on 9/23/1893 and having died on Nov 7, 1895. The obit is in their paper, The Bossier Banner.
