Biography

Notes

From Mary's FindAGrave profile:

Mary Jane Yates was born to James A. Yates and Malinda Youngblood, both of whom were of Holmes Valley Creek Indian descent (this may be incorrect they may both be from the Carolinas). Mary Jane's first husband was a Harrell, whom she had a daughter by. While married to the Harrell man, she was seeing a Leavins man, John Pitts (a neighbor), and James Leonard 'Len' Hays. One day the Harrell man came and got the little girl and left, and no one ever saw them again. She became pregnant four times and gave birth to Joseph Leavins, Levi Leavins, Martha Leavins, and another daughter Eugenia "Genia", who married Will Dauphin. She didn't really know the identity of the children's fathers, and put the last name of Leavins as each of the children's father. Apparently, she favored the Leavins man over the other three. But she really believed Levi was the Leavins man's child. The family said Levi never acted or looked like the other children, and that he looked like the Leavins man. Mary Jane ended up marrying James Leonard 'Len' Hays, and had eight more children by him. They were Arch, Mary Jane, Sirilda, James Leonard 'Scott' Jr., Gordon Bennett 'Buck', Leamon 'Lee', Charlie, and Annie. Most of this information came from 91 yr. old Wes Leavins (son of Joseph Leavins) at the 1999 Hayes Reunion at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church, in Washington Co., FL. Wes is the son of Joseph Leavins, one of the children whom Mary Jane had, but wasn't sure about the father's identity. Wes Leavins' mother was Belle, and his wife was Mary. James Leonard Hayes, also had his first eight children by his first wife, and the next eight children by his second wife, Mary Jane Yates.

DNA evidence confirms that Eugenia Pitts' father is Joseph Leavins. A descendant of Eugenia Pitts triangulates with descendants of Joseph Leavins' siblings. Mary Yates named her daughter Pitts, evidently believing her neighbor John Pitts to be the father, and this is the maiden name recorded on Eugenia's records, but actually Joseph Richmond Leavins was the father.
