William Yates was born in Lancashire, England.

William was born in Liverpool, Lancashire, England, on February 24, 1894. He was the son of Edmund Yates and Beatrice (Unknown). He was one of twelve children. (In the 1911 census, his mother declared she had twelve children but four had died). He was baptized on August 13, 1894, in Liverpool, at St George, Everton. William was enumerated in the 1901 and 1911 census residing with his family in Everton. (Everton is a district in Liverpool). In the 1911 census he declares he is an "Apprentice in Pawnbroking".

William married Margaret Elizabeth Moon on August 29, 1920, in Liverpool, at St George, Everton. According to the Parish Register, Margaret was a twenty one year old spinster residing at 11 Snaefell Avenue, Everton. Her father was named as John Moon, "Merchant's Clerk". William was listed as a twenty seven year old widower and "Salesman" residing at 7 Mere Lane, Everton. His father was named as Edmund Yates, "Painter". The witnesses were Sidney Yates and Dorothy Gregory. (Note...no definitive record found for William's first marriage).

Margaret and William would have three (possibly four) children, two dying in infancy. they were enumerated in the 1939 Register residing in Liverpool. Margaret's father, John Moon was at residence. No definitive record of William's death has been found.
