Biography

Martha Yates was born in 1865 in St Helens, Lancashire. She was the daughter of John Yates and Mary Jane (Greenough) Yates. Her birth was registered in the third quarter of 1865, in Prescot district (with her mother's maiden name recorded as Greener).

Martha married Patrick Marr in 1881 at St Helens Parish Church.

Patrick died in January 1891. His death was registered in the first quarter of 1891 in Prescot district, and his age given as 27. He was buried in St Helens Cemetery on 25 Jan 1891 in an unpurchased grave, and his age was given in the burial record as 28.

Martha married Peter Marr in 1892 at St Peter's Church in Liverpool.

Martha married John Carroll in 1906, in a registrar-attended ceremony in Prescot district.

Research Notes

One of the two possible matches for Martha's first husband was the brother of her second husband. Marrying your deceased brother's wife was still illegal at this time, but nevertheless it did happen, so it's unclear whether her two husbands were brothers or not.

No death registration found for a Peter Marr in Lancashire between 1901 and 1911. If her first husbands were brothers, the second marriage would have been invalid, so she could legally have married again without Peter having died. Or Peter may have died somewhere else.
