Runy was born sometime between 1828 and 1830 in Mason County, Kentucky. He was the son of Simeon Yates and, possibly, his wife Charlotte May. As the identity of his mother cannot yet be verified, she has been unidentified. He lived such a very short time there are few records to gather information from. That he was named for an uncle who remained in Mason County, Kentucky certain. He passed away in April of 1860 from pneumonia leaving only two children, a son from his 1st marriage and a daughter, Mary Ellen.
His name first appears in the records as Reney Yates from his marriage license to his first wife, Mary Hockman. They married 12 Sep 1850[1] The name will be spelled numerous different ways even in the scant records that can be find. They appear together in the 1850 federal census living just a few doors down from his father, Simeon. His name is Rimey Yates in this record. Their only child, Benjamin Franklin Yates has yet to be born.[2]
On 13 Jul 1853, Runy, with wife Mary sold land to George Musgrave in Crawford County, Illinois and appear to have taken residence there. His name is spelled Runa[3]
By 1855 his first wife, Mary, is deceased. Once again, he's living not too far from his father and his only son, Benjamin is with him.[4] Shortly after this census, Runy remarries to Minerva Scritchfied/Scrutchfield on 5 Mar 1857[5] The name is spelled Rhenney Yates in this record. Minerva dies shortly thereafter as on 15 Jan 1858, Runy marries the sister of Minerva, Arminda.[6] This couple will have a daughter, Mary Ellen, born just two years before Runy dies.
Runy died in Apr of 1860 as recorded in the mortality census of that year.[7] On the 21st of May 1860, Miles Flinn was appointed administrator for the estate of Rheuney Yates [8] In the term of January1861, the court recorded that Miles Flinn had provided proof of publication to creditors for Runy's estate [9] Two years later, in the January 1762 term, the court is issuing a citation to Miles Flinn requiring him to report his activities regarding the estate to said court and to provide a new bond. [10] It would appear that Mr. Flinn was remiss in his duties as administrator to this estate and others. What the outcome of that citation was, is not known. The estate disappears from the court record without giving a final accounting. A gravesite for Runy has not been found, although he was probably buried in the Hardinville Cemetery in Crawford County, Illinois.
His name will appear only two more times in the records. One in the marriage record of his daughter, Mary Ellen, in 1876 and his son, Benjamin Franklin in 1882.
