When Clifford Yates was born in 1776 in Loudoun, Virginia, his father, George, was 38 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 34. He married Margaret Walker (1786-1870) in 1804 in North Carolina. They had at least six children:

Asa Yates (1812–1865)
Samuel David Yates (1813–1880)
Martha Yates (1821–1897)

Clifford served in the War of 1812 with the Militia of North Carolina between 1812-14. He was under Thomas Brown Stokes County Regiment sixth Company with Captain William Goode and Lieutenant David Dalton.
In 1841 Clifford lost his property in Blount County, Tennessee; court documents from Maryville, Blount County TN reveal Clifford was in debt to James M Toolefor and James Wilson. Clifford lost his farm and animals to them.
He died sometime after 1860, probably in Towns, Georgia, having lived a long life of 84+ years.
