English Lafayette Yates was born on 26 Dec 1826 in Warren, Tennessee, to Benjamin Yates, Jr. He was the second youngest among some 15 brothers and sisters. At some time in the 1830s his family moved to Gasconade, Missouri. Both parens died, it appears, som time in the 1840s, and Benjamin left to fight in the Mexican War in 1847 and 1848, for which he was granted land in Arkansas. By the time of the 1850 census, he was farming in Horsehead Township in Johnson Co Arkansas, had married Sarah Jane Morris (1832-1891), and they had their first son, James Jasper. They had ten children in all. English Lafayette died at the age of 61 and is buried at Liberty Hill Cemetery in Hunt, Johnson Co.
Some family lore had it that EL Yates was a full-blooded Choctaw Indian. Documents did not support this, and it has been completely disproven though genetic genealogy.
