Larkin appears to have been a son of Thomas Yates and Phebey (Combs) Yates. The dates for his birth and death are taken from his grave stone. He is probably one of the 4 boys under 10 years old listed with Thomas Yates for the 1820 census and the male entered as age 20-29 in 1830. In 1833, 1836, and 1838 Larkin was listed next to Thomas Yates on tax lists. In February of 1843 he sold his land to his younger brother James, who was living with their father, Thomas; this was 17 months before Larkin died. A neighbor, Nicholas, mentioned in that record, was also next to Thomas Yates and Larkin on the 1838 tax list.
There is no indication that Larkin had a family of his own. No heirs were listed in the will left by Thomas in 1853. Larkin's sister Martha Patsey named one of her sons after him. In 1830 a Reverend John Yates (relation unknown) who lived nearby also named a son Larkin.
