George William Yates married Edith Birtwistle in 1906. The marriage was registered in Blackburn in the last quarter of the year.[5]
In 1911 George William Yates (age 28, Paper Maker Cutter) lived in Darwen with his wife Edith (24, Paper Sorter), son George William (16 [months]), and brother-in-law William R Birtwistle (20, Labourer For Machine Man Paper Mill).[6]
George fought in the First World War, and was killed in action in France on 7 Jul 1916.
Private George William Yates, of the Lancashire Fusiliers, who died 7 Jul 1916, is listed on the Thiepval Memorial in Thiepval, Departement de la Somme, Picardie, France.[7] The Thiepval Memorial, aka the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, is in honor of those who died in the Somme sector but who have no known grave.
