Biography

Elizabeth was born in about 1619.[1]

"According to the Muster of the inhabitants of the corporation of James City in Virginia, taken 24 January 1624, the three children of Sir George and Lady [Temperence Flowerdew] Yardley were all born in the colony, namely their eldest child and only daughter, Elizabeth, in 1619..."[2]

After Elizabeth's father died in 1627, her mother married Francis West, but then died the following year. Elizabeth and her siblings -- all minors -- were placed under the guardianship of their uncle Ralph Yardley (back in England) who won a lawsuit to protect their father's estate.[2]

A memorial-only profile on Find-a-Grave claims she died on 19 July 1660 in Jamestown, James City County, Virginia. [3] There is no solid documentation of such a death.

Research Notes

Disputed Spouse

A previous version of this profile claimed citing only the highly unreliable "International Marriages" that Elizabeth Yeardley married about 1631 in Williamsburg, Virginia to Joseph Croshaw.[4] and they had 4 children. There is no independent evidence to support this claim, and it is more likely she returned to England after her parents' death.

Other

From Martha W. McCartney, Virginia Immigrants and Adventurers, 1607-1635: A Biographical Dictionary, p 775:

Elizabeth Yeardley (Yardley). Elizabeth, the daughter of Sir George and Lady Temperance Flowerdue Yeardly, was born in Virgnia around 1619 and on February 16, 1624, was residing in Jamestown (1) with her parents, brother Argoll, and the family's servants. The Yeardleys were still in Jamestown on January 24, 1625, at which time Elizabeth was age 6. The Yeardly children lost their father in 1627 and their mother (who had remarried) in December 1628. Elizabeth stood to inherit a sixth of her late father's estate, the bulk of which was in the hands of her uncle Ralph Yeardly, who lived in England (CBE 38, 54; MEY 726)."

By "Sir George Yeardley, or Yardley, governor and captian general of Virginia, and Temperance (West) Lady Yeardley, and some of their descendants"

Sir George Yeardley was one of the ablest and most popular of Virginia's Colonial Governors. His public acts are matters of history, and as many of them have been published and commented upon in several magazines during the past few years, I shall confine myself in this article to giving a list of as many of his descendants as the limited time at my disposal has allowed me to trace. If simply a matter of mentioning those who have borne Yeardley as a surname my list would be short and easy of compilation, for the name became extinct in his line of descendants, in the fourth generation, and only one son and one grandson lived to have issue, and the surviving children of the latter were three daughters, neither of whom married a Yeardley, and after their marriage the name of Yeardley, except as a baptismal name, disappeared from Virginia so far as I have discovered. It is only recently that the maiden name of Temperance, Lady Yeardley, has again become known in this country. For many years, historians and genealogists have sought it in vain. She came to Virginia in the "Falcon". [5]

> Hotten's Original List of Immigrants; Capt. Nelson Martin, Master

> N. E. Hist. and Gen. Reg. p415 and was Temperance West when she married Sir George. Her parentage is still undecided.

I have a tree showing she Elizabeth Yeardly Yardly married William Gelding in 1647. Has there been anyone who has looked at this potential? Actually, there is an immigration doc for an Elizabeth Gelding so may be wrong also...... But wait her mom went back to England, so maybe this is her coming back married?

Sorry, I am fairly sure dates dont match for this link....

Is there ANY primary source to prove that this Elizabeth Yeardley married to Joseph Crowshaw and was the mother of Unity Crowshaw who married Gov. John West II? It is known that Joseph had many wives; if she was his first, as some say, and lived till 1660, did she divorce him, or was he a bigamist?

I'd love to know because if she IS the mother of Unity Crowshaw West, then I am a direct descendant of Old Gov. George and Temperance. ♥

Since we seem to be at an impasse, I have sought advice from the project leaders of WikiTree's US Southern Colonies project about what to do; they recommend we take this discussion to G2G and get input from others. We can also ask someone to take a look at English records to see if there is evidence of Elizabeth after she became ward of her uncle Ralph Yardley. I will start a g2g thread.

According to this profile Elizabeth was twelve when she married and eleven when her first child was born (a year before the supposed marriage). That seems beyond unlikely. There is also an extra child attached to this profile, no record of a daughter Catherine for Joseph.

I am in favor of keeping the info as is with qualifying remarks from those who disagree; as this is a free and shared site, I think that works best to maintain an open discussion. For those who favor more rigid requirements, I recommend using a paid genealogical tool.

Until something better is found, I recommend leaving this profile as is. The questions and uncertainties are noted.

Unfortunately, the sources cited for the marriage and her death are highly unreliable. Most if not all wikitree pre-1700 projects disallow them. And there are no sources for her being mother of the attached children. She also doesn't meet wikitree's criteria for uncertain. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Uncertain

We can link to the disputed relations from the narrative, but unless you have something stronger than what's cited here now, there really is not sufficient evidence to keep her spouse or children attached.

Is there ant contemporaneous documentation the shows her in Jamestown after the death of her mother? I don’t see anything in either Dorman’s “Adventurers” or mcCartney’s “Immigrants,” the two comprehensive sources for early Virginia. Is there someone who could look for her in England?

Patrick Barnes, you're active on wikitree. Please respond to the comments below that you support her detachment from her Croshaw spouse and children or provide a strong source for retaining her. Thanks.

There is no record of Elizabeth after her parents’ deaths in 1627 and 1628. She may have returned to England.

And Joseph Croshaw's profile indicates there is no proof he was ever married to her. Shall we detach her as his spouse and mother of his children?
posted by Jillaine Smith
Lacking a response in well over a year, we are detaching her from Croshaw and his children.

Yeardly-8 and Yeardley-5 appear to represent the same person because: dups with same spouse

Crowshaw-3 and Yeardley-5 appear to represent the same person because: Crowshaw-3 is the product of 2 junk gedcom uploads - 1 was Unknown Unknown & the other Mrs Joseph Crowshaw. They both referenced being the mother of Ursula. I suggest we merge this into Ursala's mother, Yeardly-5 to remove from the wikitree.
