Biography

John James (J.J.) was born in 1841 as a twin to sister Sarah. They were the 8th and 9th born to William Yeary Jr. and Lucinda Hughes (Koger) Yeary . J.J. enlisted in the Confederate Army in the fall of 1861 and served in Company A, Virginia 21st Infantry Battalion, then mustered out and transferred to Company A, Virginia 21st Infantry Battalion near the end of 1862. [1]

He eloped with Elizabeth Pennington (Zion) Yeary in the spring of 1863. He received a pension because of his service and Elizabeth took the pension when he passed away. [2] They had 18 children together and lived in the Pennington Gap area. At the age of 77 he passed away in 1918 and is buried in the Zion Family Cemetery.[3]
