Notes:
Attempted SUICIDE.— The farmer named George Yeomans, against whom a verdict was given in the Bathurst District Court last week for maliciously destroying trees on land leased to him by Mr. R. Pratley, attempted to commit suicide after reaching his home near Orange.
The following particulars are given by the Orange Advocate: — News reached Orange on Friday morning of a determined attempt at suicide by a man named George Yeomans, residing at Pretty Plains, about seven miles from Orange.
From the information received, it appears the unfortunate man cut his throat from ear to ear. He appeared to be very despondent and downcast since Wednesday last, when he lost a case at the Bathurst District Court before Judge Docker.
Yeomans has met with a series of reverses of late, and being of a very sensitive nature, this must have led to the reckless attempt of committing self-destruction.
Up to the commencement of the year, he held a farm from Robert Pratley in the Bathurst district, and owing to the adverse seasons and the long continued droughts, he found that he was unable to pay the rent. Pratley, who sued him for £25 at the Bathurst District Court for damages, for destroying fruit trees which were growing on the land, got a verdict for the amount.
Yeomans, who holds a farm at Pretty Plains from Mr. Smith, of the Royal Hotel, Orange, since denied that he demolished the trees. Dr. Coxwell was called to the case on Friday, and found the patient nearly pulseless. The larynx or upper part of the windpipe was completely severed, but the large blood vessel had escaped.
Dr. Coxwell stitched the wound, and applying the usual restoratives the man showed signs of improvement. His recovery is doubtful. He must have inflicted the wound with a razor, for Yeomans was found by a farm hand near his house lying on the ground with a razor by his side in a small pool of blood.
