Florence was recorded in the 1881 census at age 4, living at the back of 20 Barn Street, Birmingham with her parents and infant brother. John Joseph (aged 8 months).[2]
In the 1891 census, 14-year-old Florence was recorded as a 'press worker' in the production of military buttons. She was living with her parents and siblings at 40 Court 6, Hospital Street, Birmingham.[3]
She married bicycle maker Alfred Hickman on 11 April 1898 at St Stephen's Church, Birmingham. Both their addresses at the time of their marriage was 41 New John Street (the address of Florence's father in the 1901 census).[4]
Florence appears to have died either during or soon after the birth of her first child, who was also given the name Florence Ann.[5]
Research Notes
mistranscribed as Flinchann in 1881 census
witnesses at marriage - Joseph Hickman and Sarah Smith (not Alfred's father Joseph who was recorded as deceased)
There is a baptismal record of another Florence Ann Hickman (born 28 April 1898; baptised 1 June 1898) - parents given as Joseph and Sarah Hickman. This appears to be a relative of Alfred's naming their daughter after Florence. Their baby also died soon after.
