Hello Ken!

I’m conducting the 6-month check in for the US Black Heritage Project. Because we are growing so fast, it’s not always possible for me to see what everyone’s working on.

I’d love to hear what you’ve been working on and if you are still happy being a part of the Topics Team. Members can change teams at any time. If you need something to work on, we now have a master task list here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:US_Black_Heritage_Project_Tasklist

We now have a project badge! Hooray! As soon as I hear back from you that you’d like to continue with the project, I will add the badge to your profile.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Emma

Thanks so much for the contact. I'm embarrassed to say I haven't done what I thought I would do when I first contacted you. Our 501(c)(3), Yocum African American History Association, has been taking a lot of my time. Our book, Black History 1619-2019, has gone through the second printing, I'm doing a lot of social media work for the organization, and we're working on Part II of a documentary, Black Seeds: The History of Africans in America.

I would, though, like to contribute to the Wikitree project in the areas of Notables and Military and War. These are areas where we have identified many individuals. Perhaps a start would be to look at the notables spreadsheet to see where I can help. Can I get a link to it?

thanks for the check in, Ken. You are indeed very busy! I sent you a link to the spreadsheet and let our PC of Military and War, Sarah, know you were interested in that area. You now have the project badge. Don't feel you have to do a ton of work to keep up. We just ask for some activity between 6-month check ins. Emma
Ken, I have added additional documents to support the 1839 death date for John Yocum. Please see his profile. The grave stone was erected long after he was dead and was mistakenly place on his son's grave. At least that has been my theory. I think the Bible record with the John William Yocom's (son) death date and age also shows that the man who died in 1840 was far too young to be the Revolutionary soldier. Cari Y.

Hi Ken

I see that you just did the Pre-1700 Self-Certification. That's great! Also noticed you made 189 contributions to Wikitree, thank you! Here at WikiTree we like to have our members involved with others; collaboration is key!

Is there a particular time period, location, or topic you're interested in? Maybe you have some historically-significant ancestors?

Why don't you stop by the One Name Studies project, to see if there's already a name study for (surname) going on? The current leaders for that are Doug Lockwood and Alison Andrus. They would be happy to get you started.

Again, thanks for volunteering to work on Pre-1700 profiles!

Hi!

Now that you have had a little time to try WikiTree, there are a few more features you may find useful.

Ideas on what to include in a profile can be found in Styles and Standards, including some tips on writing biographies.

If you need to describe an event, an heirloom or a location relevant to your research, you may like to learn about Free Space Profiles.

Lastly, sometimes you'll run into unresponsive profile managers. We have a process for resolving those unfortunate situations.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask via my profile page.

If there is something you are having trouble understanding or you need additional help learning how to use WikiTree, you can always contact a mentor.

Both G2G and mentors are accessible through the Help drop down menu top right of your page. There are also useful tabs at the top of your profile.

Just for fun, come and join in on our Question of the Week: Aside from a person, what has been your absolutely best source'" of information?

Happy researching!

Welcome to Wikitree! I'm so glad you found us!

Wikitree is one BIG world-wide family tree that is freely accessible to everyone. Our goal is to have one profile per person which means we all work together as a BIG friendly and polite collaborative team!

If you are interested in sharing your research and want to collaborate to add your family, please fill out the TAGS on your profile page and click SAVE TAG(s) AND VOLUNTEER.

Your Tags can include names like JOHNSON (a surname) or NEW_ZEALAND (a location) and a comment explaining why this subject interests you. Once you choose to Volunteer, one of our Greeters will be happy to confirm your membership, and you'll be on your way! Welcome to the Family!
