Biography

Earl Yohe has German Roots.
Earl Yohe was a Pennsylvanian.

Earl, son of Cletus Sylvester Yohe and Leah Naomi Strausbaugh,[1] was born 6 August 1918 in Spring Grove, York County, Pennsylvania.[1][2] He grew up there, where in 1920, the household at 247 North Water Street consisted of his parents Cletus S. (age 29, paper mill stack-runner) and Leah N. Yohe (25), Earl Chester (1) and his sister Eva M. (7).[3]

By 1930, Sylvester (age 40, paper mill painter) and Leah N. Yohe (35) purchased a home at 247 Water Street in Spring Grove, where they raised their children Eva M. (18, knitting mill machine runner), Earl C. Yohe (11) and Fred E. (3).[4]

About 1938, Earl married Marie Antoinette Marchio,[1][5] daughter of the Italian-born Antonio Giuseppe "Anthony Joseph" Marchio and his wife Mary Caroline Coble.[6] The may have had a child.[1][7]

The economy in tatters at the end of the Great Depression, Earl C. (21, barber shop owner) and his wife Marie A. Yohe (23, trouser seamstress, pants factory) settled in his parents' home in Spring Grove, where the household in 1940 included Cletus S. (age 50, runs calendar stacks at paper mill), Leah N. (45), and Earl's brother Fred E. Yohe (13).[5] The record shows that Earl had completed his freshman year of high school; Marie was a high-school graduate; his father had completed six years of formal education and his mother, seven.[5]

His wife died 3 August 1940.[8]

On 31 August 1942 at Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, Earl enlisted in the United States Army.[7] He served in the 2nd Armored Division in Africa, Sicily, and the European Theatre of Operations for three years. "His service record included the Arrow Head Award for beachhead operations in the Sicilian Campaign and 6 Battle Stars in the European Theatre of Operations as a TEC 5. He was also the recipient of the Belgian Fourragere Unit Citation from the Belgium Government."[1]

After returning from the war, on 28 April 1946 in York County, he married Rose Marie Senft,[1][9] daughter of William Clarence Senft and Claudia Emma Stambaugh.[9] They had one son.[1][9]

Earl died 3 February 2004 at Manor Care Health Services South in York Township, York County,[2] and was buried 5 February 2004 at Spring Grove Cemetery in Spring Grove.[1]
