Biography

James York was born September 6, 1702, likely either in Stonington, New London County, Connecticut, or in Westerly, Washington County, Rhode Island. He was a son of James York and Hannah Stanton.

He married his wife Elizabeth Case on January 11, 1727/28 at South Kingstown, Rhode Island. Together they had the following children:

  1. Edward York. b. 18 Apr 1730
  2. Elizabeth York, b. 11 Feb 1732
  3. Stephen York, b. 24 May 1735
  4. Hannah York, b. 28 Feb 1738
  5. James York, b. 25 Nov 1740
  6. William York, b. 20 Jan 1742

James York was chosen constable in Westerly on June 5, 1738.

In the Warwick probate records: To the Honorable Town Council of Warwick in the county of Providence in the Colony of Rhode Island, gentlemen, these may certifie that the Town of Charles Town in Kings County and Colony aforesaid do own and acknowledge Elizabeth York widow to James York of said Charles Town Decd and her children that she had by ye said deceased York to be inhabitants of said Charles Town and will receive them as such at any time when required Signed order of the Town Council of said Charles Town this third day December AD 1744[1]
