Fielding was born in 1871. He was the son of Parmenas Wesley Yost (1845-1920) and Elzena (Ammons) Yost (1852-1943). He passed away in 1946.
Fielding attended Ohio Northern and Lafayette Universities. He earned a law degree from the University of West Virginia. His first coaching job was at Ohio Wesleyan in 1897. The following year he became the Head Football Coach at the University of Nebraska. He was preceded by Eddie Robinson and followed by Edwin Branch. He left Nebraska and was coaching the following year at Kansas. The next year he was hired to lead Stanford.
Fielding Yost was a legendary coach for The University of Michigan from 1901-1926 (except for 1924), compiling a 165–29–10 record and six national championships including the controversial 1901- 1904 Championships with multiple players who played more than four years of college football.
