Obituary

W F YOUMANS
Born 1853 Died 1908

The departure from this life of W F Youmans at Batesburg, SC, caused sorrow and gloom throughout a large circle of earthly friends and kindred, especially in Hampton, his native county. His family name has been an historic landmark of old Beaufort district from colonial times till now and all along the family biographical horizon brilliant stars have shed lustre in South Carolina history in the personages of Baptist ministers, lawyers, legislators and good citizens of eery profession and occupation, who were defenders of Carolina's social, religious, civil and political faith, especially in her trying period and darkest hours.

Our memory reverts to more than four decades of the now long ago; to the modest home of James P Youmans of old St Peter's Parish, around which clustered a galaxy of six noble sons, who were the sunshine and pride of all social circles. The eldest of these, Hon M Youmans, was a leading man of his State, a brave Confederate soldier and high-toned Christian gentleman, and all the brothers were his peers. W F, a younger brother, was also handsome, brave and clever, and in 1875 he won for his bride Miss Jessie Manker, one of the best men of the old ante-bellum type.

The result of this union was six bright and splendid children, five of whom still survive, viz: Mrs C M Rhodes of Batesburg, SC, Dr W F Youmans, a popular physician of Lockhart, SC; L M Youmans, a prosperous businessman of Luray, SC; Miss Minnie V Youmans, a graduate nurse of Charleston, SC; R L Youmans, a successful traveling salesman; and little Ashley J Youmans, in Paradise, the heavenly home. His worthy and excellent widow is honored and esteemed by everybody, and has the sympathy and condolence of all who know her. Both of them were members of the Christian church and his earthly body now sleeps in the Apian Way at old Black Creek church among the sacred dust of his ancestors and many modern Christian worthies,

"Like the swift, fleeting meteor And fast flying cloud."

But this world is not our home. As the seed contains the germ that develops the beautiful flower and venerable tree, and as the egg has the elements that produce the nightingale and stately eagle, so every man has the principle of immortality that will, through the holy spirit, consummate our everlasting life. Phidias, the great sculptor, developed Apollo-Belvedere and unveiled him in the presence of myriads of admiring ancient Romans and Grecians and the soul of W F Youmans, now clothed with immortality, has been unveiled in the Celestial City, midst the redeemed and sanctified-a multitude that no man can number.

The sleep of death brought sad good-night,
And hid him from our mortal sight;
But night will pass and morning come,
And we'll meet again in the heavenly home.
And hear it where the soul is filled.

By his friend,
W H Dowling
