Biography

Amadon was born 1 Apr 1849 in Chesterville, Morrow Co., Ohio. He married Mary Margaret Caveny on 1 Oct 1874 in Juniata Co., Pennsylvania; he died 13 March 1930 in National City, San Diego Co., California. During his life he was a carpenter, contractor, gold miner, undertaker and handy man. In 1878/79 while the family was living in Elkhorn, Nebraska near Omaha, they were in a tornado, where their house was picked up and blown a half-mile distance and dropped in a cornfield. After the storm, the family moved on to Kansas where they lived for a year or two before moving to Colorado where they settled in Fort Collins by 1881. He had a furniture store and made caskets upstairs over the store. His wife's obituary (in 1945) in the Fort Collins newspaper stated that he was in charge of the first burial in Grandview Cemetery there. In 1888 he purchased 160 acres north of Fort Collins in Larimer County. For a brief time in the late 1890s the family relocated to Idaho Springs, Colo., where he and his sons mined for gold. During his last years in California, he developed and printed photographs and sharpened hand saws. He was the father of 8 children--3 daughters and 5 sons. Amadon was quite a character--he wore a full beard and mustache, chewed tobacco, and spent his last days in a rocking chair on a small porch on the south side of a little one-room house where he lived in the backyard of his daughter, Nellye & her family, chewing and rocking and telling tall tales to his grand kids & their friends.
