Biography

James Young was an officer of the Royal Navy who saw service during the War of the Austrian Succession, the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence, rising to the rank of admiral of the white.[1]

His will (proved Canterbury 31 Jan 1789) mentions these children:

  • Susannah Young
  • Elizabeth Young
  • Sophia Young
  • Captain William Young
  • Harry? Young

and a "present wife":

  • Sophia, married 18 November 1762

Relatives

ODNB says that James Yonge (surgeon) (1647-1721) (Wikipedia:James Yonge (surgeon)) was James's great-uncle. That implies that Yonge's parents John Yonge and Joanna Blackaller were also Admiral Young's great-grandparents. The missing link is Admiral Young's grandfather, who was one of John Yonge's other six children. One candidate is Nathaniel Young (1656-1699), who is the only brother of James Yonge's mentioned by name in the latter's Wikipedia entry.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
