Margaret, born in Ramsay, Lanark, Upper Canada [1]about 1834, was the daughter of Robert and Annie Young. In 1861 she and her husband James Naismith lived in Ramsay Twp, Lanark County, Canada West (Ontario), where John worked as a carpenter. They lived in a house on Robert Young's farm with their seven-year-old daughter, Ann.[2]After moving to Quebec, Margaret and John both died of typhoid fever in 1870, leaving three young children, Annie, James and Robert.[3][4]
