Biography

When Anne Young was born in 1819 in Greenbrier, Virginia, her father, Mathias Geyhart Young, was 31, and her mother, Nancy Sarah Hickman, was 29. She married John Henry Dorsey on June 21, 1837, in Fayette, West Virginia. They had 11 children in 27 years: James Henry, Mary Jane, Edna A, William Preston, John T, Laura Susan, David L, Eunice A, Benjamin, Hyrcanus S. She died on May 8, 1881, in Paola, Kansas, at the age of 62, and was buried in Paola Cemetery, Oak Grove Section, Paola, Kansas.

Ann Dorsey's Last Will and Testament I, Ann Dorsey, of Paola Miami County Kansas being of sound mind and memory do hereby make publish and declare this to be my Last Will and Testament.
Item 1 - That all my just debts shall be paid.
Item 2 - I give and bequeath to my son J H Dorsey the sum of Five Dollars.
Item 3 - I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Jane Dolar the sum of Five Dollars.
Item 4 - I give and bequeath to my daughter Edna A Edwards the sum of Fifty Dollars provided she shall be living at the time of my death, and if not living the sum of Five Dollars shall be paid to her legal heirs.
Item 5 - I give and bequeath unto my daughter Eunice A Trim the sum of Five Dollars.
Item 6 - I give and bequeath unto my daughter Laura S Settles the sum of Five Dollars.
Item 7 - I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Elizabeth Dorsey the sum of Five Hundred Dollars in money, one good cow and my best bed and bedding complete.
Item 8 - I give and bequeath unto my son William P Dorsey the sum of Five Dollars.
Item 9 - I give and bequeath to my son John T Dorsey the north-half of the north-half of the north-west quarter of section no. eleven township seventeen range no. twenty-three in Miami County Kansas.
Item 10 - I give and bequeath to my son David L Dorsey the south-half of the north-half of the north-west quarter of section no. eleven township no. seventeen, range no. twenty-three in Miami County Kansas.And he David L Dorsey is hereby prohibited from selling or otherwise disposing of the above-described land until after his youngest brother who shall be living shall have arrived at the age of 21 years.
Item 11 - I give and bequeath unto my sons Benjamin W Dorsey and Hyrcanus S Dorsey the south-half of the north-west quarter of section no. eleven township no. seventy of range no. twenty-three in Miami County Kansas provided that at the death of my youngest son Hyrcanus S Dorsey all his right title and interest in the above described real estate shall invest in and become the property of Benjamin W Dorsey.
Item 12 - I give and bequeath unto my sons Benjamin W and Hyrcanus Dorsey after paying and providing for the bequests heretofore made in this will all the residue of my property both real and personal of which I may die seized, including the insurance policy upon my life in the Odd Fellows Funeral Benefit Association.
Item 13 - I hereby constitute and appoint William P Dorsey to be the Executor of this my last Will and Testament.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this the 8th day of August AD 1877Witness - EW Robinson Signed Ann Dorsey (X) her mark.The foregoing Last Will and Testament was signed sealed and declared by the said Ann Dorsey in our presence and we have signed the same as witnesses in her presence and in the presence of each other W J Roscoe and J F Chandler
Codicil No. 1 - On this 30th day of May 1878 I, Ann Dorsey, do make publish and declare this codicil to my Last Will and Testament as above set forth and I do hereby withdraw and amend the bequests made in items 9 and 10 going to my sons John T Dorsey and David L Dorsey each forty acres of land therein described and I hereby give and bequeath the same Viz the north-half of the n.w. quarter of sec no. 11 to 17 of R no. 23, to my sons, Benjamin W Dorsey and Hyracanus S Dorsey jointly.In lieu of the bequest withdraw from my sons John T and David L Dorsey.I hereby give and bequeath unto them the sum of Fifty Dollars each.
It is my will that my son Benjamin shall take care of and maintain his invalid brother Hyrcanus and in consideration of doing so he is to have the use and benefit of all the real estate hereby bequeathed to him and on his, Hyrcanus, death to have all the real and personal property conveyed in this will to said Hyrcanus.
Witness E W Robinson Signed Mrs. Ann Dorsey (X) her mark.The above codicil was signed sealed and declared by the said Ann Dorsey to be her Last Will and we herewith sign our names as witnesses at her request and in her presence Sutton S Clover and Albertus Knapp.
Codicil No. 2 - On this 26th day of April 1881 I, Ann Dorsey do make publish and declare this as Codicil No. 2, to my Last Will and Testament.Item No. 7 I now change to read as follows Viz.I give and bequeath to my daughter Sarah Elizabeth Dorsey (now Patten) the sum of One Hundred and Fifty Dollars leaving the cow and bed as heretofore devised.Item no. 3 I change to read to Mary Jane Dolar, I give the sum of One Hundred Dollars.Item no. 4 I change to read to my daughter Edna A Edwards I give the sum of One Hundred Dollars.Item no. 5 I change to read to my daughter E. A Trim I give the sum of One Hundred Dollars.Item no. 6 I change to read as follows to my daughter Laura S Settles I give the sum of One Hundred Dollars.

State of Kansas, Miami County SS.In the Probate Court of said County W J Roscoe and J F Chandler of lawful age, being by me duly sworn upon their respective oaths in Open Court depose and say that they were present at the execution of the Last Will and Testament of Ann Dorsey now deceased.That they saw her sign the same as Testatrix and that they signed the same as Witnesses at her request and in her presence and in the presence of each other.That at the time of executing the same the said Ann Dorsey was of lawful age and of sound mind and memory and not under any restraint and that the Testatrix will knew the contents of said Last Will at the time of signing the same.Signed W J Roscoe and J F Chandler.Sworn and Subscribed to before my this 1st day of June 1881E W Robinson Probate Judge.

State of Kansas Miami County SS.I, John C Collins Probate Judge and Ex-Offices Clerk of the Probate Court in and for the County and State aforesaid hereby certify the foregoing to be a true copy of the last will and Testament together with Codicil No one and No two made to the said last Will and Testament of Ann Dorsey deceased as appears of record and now on file in this court.Witness by hand and official seal this 24th day of October 1885.Signed John C.
